SunBeams is modeled on
Rainbows highly successful grief support curricula for older children, Rainbows and Spectrum. Through SunBeams, children ages 3-4 will have an opportunity to grieve the loss in their family and develop appropriate coping mechanisms for life. The process involves weekly meetings with a trained Facilitator in small groups of no more than five children. In the sessions, children have the opportunity to talk about their feelings and to share their grief in a safe and supportive environment. Part of the curriculum involves using activities such as puppets, especially designed to help them express their feelings and to learn new coping strategies. The participants work through the grief process to enable them to cope with the stresses of divorce, separation or loss. They also work with a variety of materials that provide an outlet for their feelings and an opportunity to develop more trusting relationships with peers, teddy bears and adults. The sessions include the following subjects: Self, Divorce and Death, Anger, Family, Belonging, Trust and Coping Tools. As participants work through these sessions, they are developing and strengthening their own problem solving skills and abilities, learning new ways to look at their problems, their families, themselves, and their environment. Learning to trust their Facilitator and the other members of their group has the effect of encouraging strong emotional support among the group members. The emphasis on unconditional positive acceptance that is fostered in the group promotes positive behavior changes and encourages further growth.
